What are the symptoms of thyroid?

Thyroid Symptoms

Thyroid disorder can affect anyone: men, women, children, but they are more common in women, and become more usual with age.

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped organ that is found in the neck just in front of the voice box, which makes the thyroid hormones, T3 and T4 which behave as chemical messengers, moving through the blood stream to all the cells and tissues in the body. These thyroid hormones dominates the speed at which your body functions, which is also called your ‘metabolism’. They therefore affect your heartbeat, energy levels, digestion, body temperature and even how you think and feel.

The thyroid gland has a huge effect on how our body works and that’s why it’s necessary to have the right amount of thyroid hormone in our system. If the amount is less, then the cells work too slowly but if the amount exceeds, the cells work too rapidly. However, in some people the gland doesn’t work properly. An abnormally inactive thyroid gland may lead to a condition called hypothyroidism and alternatively too much of thyroid secretion might lead to hyperthyroidism.

The symptoms of hypo and hyperthyroidism are very wide ranging. Hypothyroidism causes the body’s metabolism to slow down leading to tiredness, obesity, constipation, dry hair, a hoarse voice, anxiety issues and concentration problems etc whereas inversely higher levels of thyroid speeds up metabolism leading to symptoms such as palpitation, weight loss, diarrhoea, thirst, mood swings, irritations and restlessness.

At times all of the above mentioned symptoms might just be missed or confused with other conditions. For some, the symptoms are indistinct and hardly notable while some might have a serious impact on daily life. Unrestrained thyroid disorders may also lead to problems related to fertility and pregnancy and also deep-rooted heart issues.

Therefore it’s highly important to get yourself diagnosed even if the symptoms are light.

Thyroid disorders are mostly diagnosed by checking the levels of thyroid hormones in the blood and sometimes by physical examination. That is the reason it is very important to have regular blood tests for constant monitoring, mainly during pregnancy. A healthy lifestyle along with a well-balanced diet can keep your thyroid levels on check. Quit smoking today and consult your physician as per requirement because symptoms of thyroid usually respond well to treatments. Stay fit and stay happy.
