Have you experienced a small lump under your skin which is easily moved when pressed lightly? This lump can be identified as Lipoma. A lipoma is a slow-growing, fatty lump that primarily develops between your skin and the underlying muscle layer. It can frequently be easily moved by pressing lightly. A lipoma is not cancerous and is generally harmless. However, if your lipoma bothers you, is painful or is growing, it may be a good idea to seek treatment quickly.
People of any age can develop a lipoma, but you are most likely to see this skin growth if you’re between ages 40 and 60. Lipomas are very common. Around 1 in every 1,000 people will develop a lipoma in their lifetime.
Causes:
The causes of lipomas are largely unknown. There may be a genetic cause in people with multiple lipomas. Around 2 to 3 per cent of people who develop a lipoma have a family history of the condition.
Symptoms:
You can easily identify lipoma by following symptoms:
- Feel soft to touch
- Move easily if prodded with your finger
- A small lump under your skin
- Be colourless
- Grows slowly
Treatment:
Usually, a lipoma is very harmless, but if it bothers you, or you feel pain and see eventual growth, then might need to meet a surgeon, and they might recommend that it be removed through surgery.
